In the formative years of the TWD class, it was seen a bit as an exhibition class more than a competitve one and as such, there really weren't a lot of rules that restricted what one could do so all manner of powerplants were tried. Not least of which Allison V12s like seen here in this IH truck bodied machine. Those exotic powerplants would go by the wayside by the late 80s and a very consistent rulebook would emerge that has made TWDs one of the most popular and difficult classes on the sport.
